KATHMANDU, AUGUST 23

The government has agreed to take three measures in response to the demands of the family of three-year-old Garima Chaudhary of Jitpur Simra sub-metropolitan city-1, Bara, who died in a tragic incident.

An agreement was reached during a meeting between Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, other ministers, government representatives and Garima’s parents at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday evening.

Under the agreement, the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs will form a seven-member committee to review existing laws on serious crimes and punishments and recommend new legal provisions in line with public expectations. The committee will submit its report within a week.

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development, in coordination with the local authorities, will also facilitate the construction of a memorial for Garima in accordance with her family’s wishes.

The government has further assured the family that they will be allowed to conduct Garima’s funeral according to their customs and traditions.

The agreement was signed by Home Minister Gurung, Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sobhita Gautam, Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security Sita Badi, and Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Geeta Chaudhary.

Garima’s father Manoj Kumar Chaudhary and mother Manmati Chaudhary signed the agreement on behalf of the family.

The government has also committed to addressing the family’s other demands while ensuring that the judicial process concerning the incident proceeds.
