KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 6

Nepal Police have launched a special nationwide security operation for the Tihar, Nepal Sambat and Chhath festivals, stepping up patrols, surveillance and border inspections to prevent crime and maintain public safety during the festive season.

Under the Special Security Plan 2083, police have increased deployments in public transport hubs, major market areas, border crossings and customs points, where authorities say risks of theft, robbery, gambling, betting and other criminal activities typically rise during major festivals.

Police spokesperson Abhi Narayan Kafle said special attention has also been given to preventing the illegal transport, storage and sale of firecrackers and explosive materials. Dedicated patrol teams have been deployed in border and market areas to monitor such activities.

Authorities have also placed fire and disaster-response teams on round-the-clock standby, citing the increased risk of fires and accidents from oil lamps, decorative lighting and fireworks during Tihar.

Police said plainclothes personnel have been mobilised in areas considered vulnerable to gambling and other illegal activities. Monitoring has also been increased to prevent disturbances linked to excessive alcohol consumption, loud music, fireworks and community-related disputes during festival processions and gatherings.

According to police, local administrations have been requested to ensure Deusi-Bhailo programmes are conducted in an orderly manner within designated hours.

The security plan also includes measures aimed at reducing domestic violence, physical assaults and personal disputes that can increase during festival periods.

Police have urged the public to celebrate responsibly and immediately report any fire, explosion, accident or illegal activity to the nearest security agency. Authorities have also requested citizens to report illegal firecracker-related activities through the police hotline 100.
