RAUTAHAT, DECEMBER 22
It has come to light that the inmates of Gaur prison in Rautahat are being ill-treated by the prison administration.
Their plight came to light after an inmate, recently released from the prison, reported about it.
Convicted for polygamy, forty-year-old Rajesh Kumar Giri of Rautahat’s Madhavnarayan Municipality was released from the prison after completing his 16-month prison term a few days ago.
Coming out of the jail, Giri had spoken about the physical and mental torture meted out to them.
“Vandalism, extortion and the likes are happening inside the prison under the leadership of Chaukidar Bikki Singh and his group. I reported about it to the prison administration but to no avail. I had to suffer more for reporting the injustice,” said Giri.
“Besides, drug abuse is rampant in the prison,” Giri said, accusing the prison administration of flouting the Prison Management Act while making Bikki Singh, a rape convict, the chaukidar.
“The rule has it that anyone who is convicted of a serious crime is not suitable to be the chaukidar, but the prison administration made Bikki the chaukidar,”
Giri said, informing that he had filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission Province 2 office against malpractices in the prison.
Gaur prison Jailor Shambhu Prasad Yadav refuted Giri’s charges against the prison administration.
CDO Indradev Yadav, on his part, admitted he had heard some complaints about the prison and said he would look into them.
