With the emergence of a new coronavirus variant in Britain, the Nepali Government has imposed travel restrictions to and from the United Kingdom (UK).
Issuing a statement on December 22, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) informed that passengers traveling from or transiting through the UK would be restricted from entering the country, effective from midnight of December 23.
“This is of your urgent attention to ensure that the aircraft bound to Nepal shall not onboard the passengers originating from or transmitting through United Kingdom (UK) due to the severe contagion of new strain Coronavirus in the UK. The entry restriction for such passengers into Nepal shall be effective from 2359 hrs NST of December 23, 2020, until further notice,” read the statement by the CAAN.
Moreover, the government also ordered people who arrived from the UK between December 16 – 22 to stay at a hotel quarantine for ten days. They are required to undergo PCR tests within seven to ten days of their arrival.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health and Population directed all the government labs to make necessary arrangements to provide free COVID-19 testing facilities to those arriving in between the specified period.
Recently, the UK was hit by a newly identified variant of the coronavirus that seems 70% more contagious than the other variants. As a precautionary step, many countries, including India, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Hong Kong, Ireland, and Israel, have suspended flights to and from the UK.
