Civil society begins protest against HoR dissolution

KATHMANDU: The civil society have begun their protest against dismantling of the House of Representatives by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, calling the move unconstitutional.

Members of the civil society today gathered in the capital city holding banners that read ‘people’s extensive movement against regression’.

The protest that was held in Maitighar saw protesters blowing shell horns as part of the demonstration before converging into a corner meet. They have demanded that the House be reinstated at the earliest.

Participating in the demonstration were writers, artists, rights activists, among others.

PM Oli, on December 20, recommended dissolution of the country’s Lower House, which was promptly approved by President Bidya Devi Bhandari. What has followed is much confusion and chaos, not just within the warring factions of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP), but also among other political parties and the general public.

Owing to this “undemocratic” act on part of the Prime Minister, NCP has also suffered a vertical split — while one faction is led by PM Oli, the other has its leadership in leaders Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Madhav Kumar Nepal.
