Nepal’s Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) revealed a disturbing fact pertaining to bottled drinking water.
According to the Department, around 50% of the bottled drinking water being sold in the domestic market has been found to be contaminated, posing serious health risks.
The DFTQC had tested 27 samples of the processed drinking water in the last fiscal year. It was found that 16 of the total samples were contaminated enough to prescribe as unfit for consumption.
Without further ado, the Department has filed cases against the concerned bottled water production companies at the district courts.

Kanchan Mineral Water Udyog, Banke
Yeti Beverage Pvt Ltd, Kavrepalanchok
Gaushankar GS Mineral Water, Kavrepalanchok
Prakriti Jal Udyog, Sunsari
Karmacharya Mineral and Beverage Industries, Rupandehi
Prasiddha Water Industries, Rupandehi
Universal Drinking Water Industries, Kapilvastu
Nepa Mineral Water Pvt Ltd, Kaski
Deuti Darshan Water and Beverage Pvt Ltd, Surkhet
Madhyapaschim Water and Beverage Pvt Ltd, Surkhet
Sheetal Jal Udyog, Kathmandu
In the fiscal year 2020/21, the Quality Control Department filed cases against a total of 100 firms accused of selling adulterated food products, such as dairy, spices, animal feed, snacks, edible oil, sweets, and noodles.
