Tribhuvan Army Club and Nepal Police Club won the titles of the Lama Tendi Sherpa Memorial Open Basketball Tournament here at the NSC covered hall today.
TAC recorded a comfortable 90-58 victory over Times Basketball Club in the men’s section final riding on Ayush Singh’s 26 points. Sadish Pradhan netted 17 for Times. TAC dominated the show throughout the match and won all four quarters.
TAC took a 22-10 lead and extended the lead to 16 points when they won the second quarter 24-20. TAC then claimed the third period 17-16 before winning the final quarter 27-12.
In women’s section, NPC edged past Royal Basketball Academy 52-49. After both the teams netted eight points in the first quarter, NPC took a five-point lead by winning the second period 20-15. NPC extended the lead to eight points after they bagged the third period 14-11. Royal bounced back in the final period winning it 15-10 but they could not avert the defeat.
Anusha Malla top scored in the match scoring 19 points for the winning team, while Roshani Shrestha of Royal netted 14.
Binod Maharjan of TAC and Anusha Malla of NPC were adjudged the Most Valuable Players of the tournament and they earned Rs 10,000 each. Sudeep Poudel of Royal and Dipika Gurung of Rupandehi were named the emerging players and they got Rs 7,000 a piece.
Top two teams in both section received Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively.
A total of 18 teams – 13 in men’s category and five in women’s section – took part in the 11-day tournament organised by the Nepal Basketball Association in memory of its former president Lama Tendi Sherpa, who passed away at the age of 50 in November last year. President of Nepal Olympic Committee Jeevan Ram Shrestha handed over the prizes to the winners.
