COVID-19 Third Wave has Arrived in Nepal, Warns Health Ministry

Health experts and officials at the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) have opined that the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic has arrived in Nepal.

“The third wave has hit the country,” said Dr. Sameer Kumar Adhikari, MoHP Spokesperson, pointing that both the coronavirus infection rate and the number of new positive cases have risen in recent days.

Dr. Anup Bastola, Director at the Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Diseases Hospital at Teku, also informed that the nation is steering towards the COVID-19 third wave.

“Negligence in COVID-19 safety protocols among the general public seems to have triggered the third wave in the country,” he mentioned.

Vindicating their opinions is the report by the MoHP, according to which the nation witnessed the highest single-day spike of 4,107 new positive cases after the ease of prohibitory orders. With the new cases, the nation’s COVID-19 caseload reached 769,922.

According to the MoHP, the COVID-19 infection rate in the country has surged to 26 percent.

What’s more worrying is the number of deaths due to the pandemic. Nepal has reported 35 and 37 new deaths on Wednesday and Thursday, taking the total COVID-19 death tally to 9,994.

As of today, there are 34,422 active cases and 663,663 recovery cases in the country. Among the active cases, 30,270 people are in home quarantine, 3,194 in institutional isolation, 714 in ICU’s and 156 on ventilators.

Anticipating the third wave, the MoHP has urged people suspicious about COVID-19 infection to get tested as soon as possible and help control the spread.
