KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 16
The Department of Education, with technical support from Room to Read Nepal, has completed a five-day training programme to strengthen the delivery of life skills education in schools across all seven provinces.
The programme brought together 14 master trainers from Provincial Education Training Centres (PETCs) across the country, along with 12 participants from Room to Read’s working districts of Kapilvastu, Tanahun, Nuwakot and Gorkha.
The training aimed to strengthen educators’ capacity to deliver the Life Skills Education Curriculum and help local governments integrate life skills into students’ learning experiences.
Speaking at the programme, Department of Education Director General Ana Prasad Neupane highlighted the role of life skills in children’s overall development, both inside and outside the classroom. He said the trained master trainers would support local governments and educators in delivering the curriculum to students.
The curriculum covers six key areas: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship management, responsible decision-making and problem-solving. These competencies are intended to help students build resilience, think critically, work collaboratively and respond constructively to challenges in their lives and communities.
Pushkar Lal Shrestha, country director of Room to Read Nepal, said building educators’ capacity was essential to reaching students nationwide. He added that the curriculum, developed in collaboration with the Department of Education and experts, aims to strengthen adolescents’ resilience, leadership, critical thinking, collaboration and decision-making skills.
Room to Read works with government education agencies and other partners to strengthen education systems and support children’s learning and development. The organisation, founded in 2000, focuses on foundational literacy and life skills that promote gender equality.
According to the organisation, 17 million children benefited from its programmes across 29 geographies in 2025.
