All the mobile phones illegally imported from abroad into the country will become non-functional from July 16.
Once the Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) comes into operation, all mobile sets brought without a bill and imported without paying customs duty will become unserviceable.
The MDS will secure and track all the cell phones in the country to ward off misuse and grey market imports.
“As we have observed that the Integrated Data Centre of the government can make the real-time observation of mobile devices’ genuineness, we decided to make a soft launch,” said Purushottam Khanal, NTA Chairman.
Once the system is enforced, people entering Nepal will be allowed to bring only one mobile set along with the purchase bill.
“If they bring more than one set, a customs duty will be charged on the extra sets,” said Khanal.
“The phones will need to be registered too. Illegal mobile devices will be blocked from use in Nepal.”
Currently, travelers entering Nepal are allowed to bring more than one mobile set.
From July 16, travelers bringing more than one mobile set will have to register them with the NTA to make them operational.
However, the mobile users will be notified to register with notification of denial of service after 15 days from the first detection of the unregistered set.
