KATHMANDU: Former President Ram Baran Yadav has said that President Bidhya Devi Bhandari’s move to swiftly approve unconstitutional recommendation to dissolve the parliament had raised questions about the impartiality of the institution as the Head of the State.
In a sudden but not entirely unexpected move, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had recommended the HoR dissolution on Sunday morning. The recommendation was then swiftly approved by the President, while also announcing fresh mid-term elections to be held in two rounds in April-May in 2020.
Taking to Twitter, the first president of the country said that unlike his usual stance to not comment on the roles of PM and the President, Sunday’s incident compelled him to break his silence.
“The step taken by the President has raised questions about the impartiality of the institution as the head of state. Though I never commented on the roles of PM and the President, yesterday’s incident compelled me to break the silence as it was really disheartening for me,” Yadav wrote in his social media profile.
He further said that the Supreme Court should now do the needful to correct Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s unconstitutional move to dissolve the parliament.
“We hope that the Supreme Court would do the needful to correct yesterday’s unconstitutional move,” he added in the microblogging site.
