KATHMANDU: A group of Nepali climbers have left Kathmandu for Karakoram region in Pakistan today to ascent the world’s second tallest mountain K2.
The expedition is named ‘International SST K2 Winter Expedition 2020-21’ and has a team of over 50 climbers. They will be the first group of people to ascent K2 in winter, and hence, aim to script history in mountain climbing.
This also happens to be the largest expedition in the history of Karakoram which comes under the management of Seven Summit Treks.
Expedition leader Chhang Dawa Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks along with his team will be attempting to climb the world’s second highest peak this season.
“Our team will try to climb the mountain making the first ever winter ascent of K2,” Sherpa told THT from Tribhuvan International Airport while leaving for Pakistan this morning.
According to leader Sherpa, among 14 peaks above 8,000 metres in the world, K2 remains the only unclimbed mountain in the winter season, till date.
The first Sherpa team under the leadership of Chhang Sherpa are leaving Kathmandu today.
Other team members include Sona Sherpa, Pechhumbe Sherpa, Pasang Nurbu Sherpa, Jangbu Sherpa, Pasang Dukpa Sherpa, Sukra Bahadur Tamang, Chhangba Sherpa, Lakpa Temba Sherpa, Mingtemba Sherpa.
Moreover, Blue Sky Treks And Toursit also assisting Seven Summit. “We the Blue Sky Treks And Tours team will be taking part as the local agent of Seven Summit Treks for this historical expedition. We already had everything on the spot,” it said.
