Nepal Olympic Committee is celebrating the ‘International Day of Sports for Development and Peace’ with various programmes including walkathon in Lumbini on Wednesday.

“As we are talking about development and peace, the birthplace of Gautam Buddha is the venue to celebrate the day,” said NOC President Jeevan Ram Shrestha at a press meet on Sunday. “We have plans to make it a grand event inviting International Olympic Committee officials and representatives of all 207 IOC members to Lumbini in the years to come apart from organising Peace Marathon.

If we can do that, it will help in promoting Lumbini in international arena and also support tourism sector,” added Shrestha, who is also the Member of Parliament.

On Wednesday, Lumbini Province Chief Minister Kul Bahadur KC will inaugurate the programme at Shantideep, while NOC President Shrestha, Minister Basuddin Khan, Lumbini Development Trust Vice-chairman Venerable Metteyya Sakyaputta will shed lights on the importance of the programme and World Peace after walkathon.
