NPC claim team championship

LALITPUR, APRIL 9

Nepal Police Club won the team championship of the first Krishna Prasad Bhattarai Memorial National Karate Championship here at the International Sports Complex today.

NPC claimed eight gold medals and four bronze medals to finish first and they received Rs 100,000.

Tribhuvan Army Club came second with four gold, five silver and three bronze medals, while Nepal APF Club finished third with three gold, five silver and six bronze medals.

Bagmati Province and Province-I were the other teams to win gold medals, while Karnali and Gandaki returned empty handed from the three-day championship organised by Nepal Democratic Sports Association and Lalitpur District Main Dojo under the sponsorship of Samjhana Laboratory Clinic.

Rojan Khadka of Province-I and the 13th South Asian Games gold medallist Kusum Khadka of Tribhuvan Army Club were declared the best players of the championship. Khadka won gold medal in below-84kg weight category, while Khadka was the winner in 45kg section.

On the final day of the championship, NPC karateka Sajan Moktan won the men’s 50kg section gold medal beating Bir Bahadur Tamang of APF, while Nabin Rasaili defeated Subash Ghatane of APF in the 67kg weight category final.

Also, APF’s Bijay Shrestha bagged the 44kg section gold medal defeating Subin Khatri of Bagmati Province in final.

In women’s section, TAC karateka Shanta Shrestha defeated APF’s Ester Rai in 61kg section final.

A total of 210 players from seven provinces and three departmental teams participated in the tournament that also served as preliminary selection for the Hangzhou Asian Games to be held later this year in China.

Nepali Congress leader Arzu Rana gave away prizes to the winners.

Meanwhile, the organisers felicitated sports journalist Prakash Timalsina.

Chief guest Rana handed over a letter of appreciation to Timalsina, who is editor of HamroKhelkud.
