Devastating floods triggered by unseasonal cyclonic rainfall in Nepal have wrecked crops, damaged property and infrastructure, and inundated many places.

In terms of crop damage, Nepal faced a loss of paddy worth an estimated NPR 7.22 billion due to the heavy floods in the last week.

In a preliminary study, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD) reported that the estimated loss in paddy production across the country stood at 258,092 tons.

However, the ministry is yet to calculate the actual loss as the officials are collecting actual information about the losses incurred by the farmers from all the seven provinces.

According to the information collected by the MoALD so far, Lumbini Province suffered the largest amount of crop loss due to the floods. The province lost a total of 161,223 tons of ready to harvest paddy amounting to NPR 4.51 billion.

Likewise, the Kailali and Kanchanpur districts of the Sudurpaschim Province lost NPR 1.91 billion worth paddy. The floods damaged 68,400 tons of paddy in the province.

Similarly, the floods damaged around 28,469 tons of the produced cereal crop in Province 1.

According to the Agricultural Ministry, the loss of paddy in these three districts has been estimated to be around NPR 800 million.
